Post Graduation in U.S. Wharton School UPenn

My Friend Experience Part 1 -

Having no professional experience and no family business to fall upon, I had to plan my future growth myself. I had decided to do my post-graduation in business Administration. I had received firm admission from Michigan University for the fall semester. There were hardly any visa formalities, main were the admission test, similar to today’s ‘Multiple Choice Questions’ and I-20 form. The rest formalities were taken care of by Travel Agents M/S Lee and Mairhead, having their Head office at Colaba Bombay and a moderate branch office in Ahmedabad on the Reid road (now Gandhi road).

Before leaving for U.S., I had to take help from Kamal’s friend Virendra Dalal (who later on was the Principal of H.L college of Commerce) for learning the basics of Accounting. There was nothing about U.S. that I knew. I was unaware of the hard work, which was required to put in there. One thing I did know that cooking, dish-washing and house-keeping will have to be done by me. I was totally ignorant about all these. I did not know how to prepare even Khichdi and so, all I could do was to carry “curry powder” with me and I must admit, it came really very handy there.

Also, I was also keen to know about India – our religious, culture, traditions, customs and in particular music. This was because I thought I might be seen there, as an ambassador of all things Indian. I went through some books and had made enough notes to take with me.

I had planned to reach U.S., one week before the date of my joining Michigan. This was because I wanted to try my luck to try and get admission in Wharton school of Finance and Commerce in Philadelphia, which was one of the top-most three Business Schools belonging to U.S “Ivy group”. Established in 1881, Wharton School is the first collegiate Business School in the world. Today, it has 82,000 alumni in 148 countries. It has a faculty of more than 250 – the entire World’s leading experts. It offers 11 disciplines, has 19 Research Centers making it World’s largest International Business school in the world. It is being said that University of Pennsylvania was founded by Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States.
